These natural lake bed reeds are 6 inches long with varied hole sizes from 4 to 7 mm. The slight size variation gives female bees the choice of a nesting hole that is just right for them. These quality natural reeds are hand-gathered and cut so that each reed has a node at the back, preventing parasitic wasps from entering. Hole-nesting native bees prefer reeds over tubes or wood trays, likely due to the variety of sizes that help females find suitable nesting holes more easily.
Reeds are easy to open at harvest time and should not be confused with bamboo tubes, which are extremely difficult to open without damaging cocoons. These reeds are perfect for summer leafcutter bees, other wild hole-nesting bees, and solitary beneficial pollinating wasps.
