Season & Zone

Season & Zone
Season: Fall or Spring
Exposure: Full sun, partial shade, or full shade (depending on blend)
Zone: 2b–7b

Timing

Timing
For best results, plant seed bombs in autumn just before the ground freezes. They can also be planted in early spring after undergoing a simulated winter—store them in the freezer for at least two months before use. When spring temperatures sit between 2–10°C, drop or press the seed bombs into place. If temperatures rise above 10°C, thaw the bombs at room temperature for two days before planting. Summer planting is possible but may delay germination until the following year.

Starting

Starting
For controlled placement, gently press the seed bomb into the soil without burying it. If launching them, keep in mind that they may not bloom exactly where they land. Leaves or mulch can be placed overtop for protection during winter, but should be removed in spring. In fall, seed bombs can be set directly onto soil, at ground level, or even placed on snow.

Days to Maturity

Days to Maturity
Seeds typically sprout in 4–8 weeks. Some species require a winter cycle to break dormancy and may not emerge until the following year.

Growing

Growing
Seed bombs thrive in well-draining soil and require very little maintenance. They are drought-tolerant and usually rely on natural rainfall for moisture. For spring planting, place them onto bare soil just before rainfall or watering and keep the area well-soaked during the early stages of growth. Light requirements vary by blend: Full Sun blends include Bee Zen Blend, Butterfly Garden, Eco Warrior Blend, No Brainer Container, and Radiating Sunflowers. Partial Shade blends include Bee Zen Blend, Butterfly Garden, Eco Warrior Blend, and No Brainer Container. Zen in the Shade performs best in full shade.

Seed Info

Seed Info
Each Radical Roots mix contains native wildflower seeds selected for Canadian regions, including blends sourced from Central British Columbia and the Saskatchewan Prairie region. Seed viability remains strong even when germination is delayed due to seasonal conditions. Usual seed life varies by species but remains high when stored in cool, dry conditions.

How to Grow Seed Bomb

Step 1

Timing

Planting seed bombs is most successful in autumn, just before the ground begins to freeze. They can also be planted in spring, but the bombs should be stored in the freezer for at least two months beforehand. Once spring temperatures sit between 2°C and 10°C, you can drop or launch them directly onto the soil. If temperatures are warmer than 10°C, let the bombs thaw at room temperature for two days before planting. Planting during summer is less reliable, as germination may not occur until the following year; the seeds will remain viable, but visible growth may be delayed a full season.

Step 2

Starting

If you choose to launch your seed bombs, keep in mind that they may not bloom exactly where they land. For more controlled placement, gently press the seed bomb into the soil without burying it, and cover it with leaves or mulch if desired, remembering to remove the mulch in spring. In autumn, the bombs can be placed directly onto the soil, at ground level, or even on top of freshly fallen snow.

Step 3

Growing

Seed bombs require very little maintenance once placed. They are naturally drought-tolerant and can depend primarily on rainfall for moisture. For spring planting, set the bombs on bare soil just before a rain or watering, and keep the area well-soaked until the seeds begin to establish.

Step 4

Germination

Sprouting typically takes between four and eight weeks, though some species may wait an entire year if they require a natural winter cycle to break dormancy. Summer plantings may also delay germination until the following growing season, depending on conditions.

Step 5

Harvest

Since seed bombs contain wildflower mixes, the “harvest” is the bloom itself and the habitat it creates. Different blends perform best under different light conditions: full-sun mixes include Bee Zen Blend, Butterfly Garden, Eco Warrior Blend, No Brainer Container, and Radiating Sunflowers; partial-shade blends include Bee Zen Blend, Butterfly Garden, Eco Warrior Blend, and No Brainer Container; and full-shade gardeners can enjoy Zen in the Shade.

All Radical Roots seed bombs are native to zones 2b–7b, with region-specific blends sourced from British Columbia and Saskatchewan to maintain the integrity of Canadian native species.
