In 2004 the Kaslo school was using a soft drink machine to raise money for extra curricular activities. As a staff member I objected and maintained that there was a healthier way through growing and selling squash.
This project involve students from Kindergarten to Grade 3.
The money raised supports an outdoor education program and classroom in the woods. The children and their parents harvest the squash in early October and sell the produce at the local market.
The children learn about seeds and gardening in a fun, hands-on way. It also is a bonding activity for new parents and introduces them to the volunteer spirit in our small community.
For the first 18 years this supported the Grade 8–12 Drama Program. I noticed what an amazing difference to self-confidence, (especially amongst girls), this program achieved. When this ended, the elementary teachers approached me because they wanted to use our amazing outdoor setting and natural environment to teach their lessons one day a week.
