Deltassist was started in 1972, to provide counselling services to residents of Delta. Later expanded to provide additional community services and supports including emergency food, income tax assistance, Christmas toys and food hampers, Seniors services, and information and referrals.
Every year we help thousands of people with our various programs. Over 500 families receive Christmas food hampers each year. About 100 families and individuals receive regular (daily/weekly/monthly) emergency food support. We distribute bread and vegetables provided by our community partners to whoever needs it. And in 2025 our own community garden, with the help of generous donations from West Coast Seeds, provided over 1700 bags of fresh produce for anyone in need.
With our many programs, we hope to enhance the social, psychological and physical wellbeing of our community members.
Our community garden program strives to help address food security issues in our community. The harvest from the garden provides access to fresh produce, and is a compliment to our emergency food bags of non-perishable items. We also find that the garden gives our volunteer gardeners a creative and social outlet for their talents, helping them feel more engaged in the community. The social component of working in the garden is an indirect benefit that not only supplies access to fresh produce but allows us to support individuals' mental health.
Many of our community programs couldn’t function without volunteers. In the 2024/2025 year, our volunteer teams contributed more than 5,500 hours supporting these programs. That’s equivalent to almost 3 years of full time employment!
