The Canmore Public Library Seed Exchange had it's pilot year in the summer of 2024. After immense success, it is now an integral part of summers at the library. The exchange was inspired by other libraries - both in the area and in BC - where they have full seed libraries. However, this is just an exchange, there is no cataloging of seeds, and no seed saving required for "return" (yet!).
This program was also started after it became clear that the community rallied behind food affordability and the sustainability of home gardening.
We serve a community of 19,000 and almost 300 different seed packets passed through the exchange this past summer (big thank you to West Coast Seeds for the generous donation to get us started!). Our library serves patrons from all walks of life who then participated in the exchange. From generations old heirloom seeds being added, to youngsters getting excited about planting tomatoes for the first time. There is something for everyone at the Canmore Pubic Library Seed Exchange. It is open to anyone who enters the library.
The exchange is geared towards positive change in the community - including changes to increase awareness surrounding sustainability. The educational aspect of the exchange is important in creating long lasting effects, and inspiration for growing food at home and thus increasing food stability in the Bow Valley. The exchange is also completely free, and there is no cap on taking seed packets - in hopes to create a barrier free gardening experience.
We feel that gardening betters the lives of our community members are it lends itself to sustainable practices, and food security.Gardening also promoted time outdoors to reconnect with nature and sunshine. It is also a community building experience - community gardens, seed exchanges, etc - especially when we impart that knowledge to children and foster the passion of gardening for generations to come. We have also partnered with over Bow Valley initiatives, like the Bow Valley Food Alliance, to further this education.
The Canmore Public Library Seed Exchange will return in 2026, starting in May!
