Allium sativum. Softneck garlic (sometimes called Artichoke Garlic) is the type to grow for braiding. As the name suggests, the “neck” or stem of the plant is more flexible than the hardneck types. Purple Softneck garlic is easy to grow, as the plants are cold hardy and adaptable to nearly any growing area. Bulb size varies a bit, but well-grown bulbs will contain ten or more medium sized cloves. The outer wrapper leaves are distinctly streaked with purple. Top dress around your garlic plants in early spring when they begin to show obvious growth. Just sprinkle some balanced organic fertilizer on the surface of the soil and keep the area free from weeds.
We are sorry to report that Purple Softneck was a crop failure for 2016. We hope to supply it next fall.
