Agriculture and seeds provide the basis upon which our lives depend. We must protect this foundation as a safe and genetically stable source for future generations. For the benefit of all farmers, gardeners, and consumers who want an alternative; we pledge that we do not knowingly buy or sell genetically engineered seeds or plants. We feel that genetically engineered varieties have been insufficiently tested prior to public release. More research and testing are necessary to further assess the potential risks of genetically engineered seeds. Further, we wish to support agricultural progress that leads to healthier soils, genetically diverse agricultural ecosystems and ultimately people and communities. West Coast Seeds has signed the Safe Seed Pledge.
Although we have taken many steps to prevent the incursion of GEO seeds into our catalogue of products our pledge stops short of being an absolute guarantee. We will not be held legally responsible if any of the seeds we carry test positive for genetically engineered organisms. We are advised to not sign any statements that declare with certainty that our products are pure. The possibility of genetic drift is a reality, there are many factors that go into seed production over which we have no control.
This document was developed by the Council for Responsible Genetics. It represents, in general, the opinion of many ethical seed companies as they respond to farmers’ and gardeners’ very real concerns. For more information please contact:
