Winner of the RHS Award of Garden Merit. Sugarsnax 54 carrot seeds are an Imperator type. This long, slender variety is well known for its sweet flavour and tender texture. The 24cm (9") roots are rich, dark orange, with very high beta-carotene content. The roots are incredibly straight and uniform. Plants have strong tops for bunching, and show resistance to Alternaria, Cercospera, and Pythium. For the best roots, grow in soil that has been deeply dug and broken up. Raised beds work well for long-rooted carrots like Sugarsnax. Apply a balanced organic fertilizer at planting time like Gaia's All Purpose 4-4-4 Blend.

It’s easy to learn how to grow carrots from seed. Carrots are biennials so they use their leaves in the first year to gather energy from the sun to build a big, starchy root. This is where they store their energy over the winter. The following spring they use that stored energy to send up a tall umbel of white flowers, looking strikingly similar to Queen Anne’s Lace, to which they are closely related. When the weather gets cold in the first year of growth, carrots convert a lot of their starches to sugars to act as a kind of antifreeze, so the roots become sweeter in winter.
