Lovage Seeds

When you want celery flavour without the complications of growing celery or expense of buying it – plant lovage seeds. This herb is not for containers! Lovage grows up to 3m (10’) tall, and resembles a giant celery plant — long, succulent stalks topped by dark green, intensely aromatic foliage. As a member of the family Apiacea, lovage is closely related to celery (as well as fennel, dill, parsley, carrots, and many other food plants), and will produce tall umbels of white and yellow flowers, followed by edible seeds that are sometimes used as a spice on their own.

Lovage has been grown as a herb in Europe for hundreds of years. The flavour of its leaves and stem are like intense celery with touch of anise and a hint of sweetness. The dried seeds are slightly sweeter than the leaves, and make an excellent substitute for celery seeds in recipes that call for them. The chopped leaves are very nice raw or added to salads, soups, stews, and sandwiches. Lovage is yet another garden food plant that was once thought to have aphrodisiac qualities, and it is included in nearly every available list of companion plants as improving the flavour and health of all garden vegetables.
