Viper

Description:

Imperator type. Viper carrots are long and narrow, with a very gradual taper from top to toe. The tops grow in a highly upright fashion. The crisp orange roots have virtually no core, and the flavour is robust. They can reach over 30cm (12") in length, but stay only 2cm (3/4") at the shoulder. This makes them apt for higher density plantings. The tops are strongly attached for easy harvesting. Apply carrot fertilizer or the All Purpose 4-4-4 organic fertilizer at planting time for the largest, most uniform roots.

How To Grow

It’s easy to learn how to grow carrots from seed. Carrots are biennials so they use their leaves in the first year to gather energy from the sun to build a big, starchy root. This is where they store their energy over the winter. The following spring they use that stored energy to send up a tall umbel of white flowers, looking strikingly similar to Queen Anne’s Lace, to which they are closely related. When the weather gets cold in the first year of growth, carrots convert a lot of their starches to sugars to act as a kind of antifreeze, so the roots become sweeter in winter.
