Mulch is an invaluable time-saving measure for any garden, whether you are growing vegetables, flowers, or ornamentals. Mulching can create healthier plants, reduce competition from weeds, and provide some protection for your plants from dessicating winds and cold weather; meaning that you can spend less time fighting weeds, pests and drought.
There are organic and inorganic mulches. Organic ones are made from formerly living materials and include leaves, wood chips, pine needles, straw, sawdust, and shredded bark. They will improve your soil as they decompose. Inorganic mulches include fabric, plastics, and gravel. They do not have the added benefit of soil amendment but can sometimes be the better choice depending on what your garden needs. For example, heavy black plastic mulches are ideal for smothering weeds and creating cozy warm soils for heat-loving vegetables such as eggplants and tomatoes.
