Bred for French farmers' markets, Red Butterworth has been popular for years now. Heavy, firm heads have lovely pale hearts and leaves are dark green with a very pretty red-brown overlay. It is tip-burn resistant and heads will mature all at once. This variety is recommended for market gardeners. Plant from early spring to mid-summer for a continuous harvest of high quality butterheads. Matures in 70 days. (open pollinated seeds)
Butterheads or Boston lettuces have loose outer leaves surrounding pale, slightly oily, loose, soft heads. Bibb types (named after the man who developed them) have a more open centre-like a green rose. Both types make small heads and can be planted 20-25cm (8-10") apart.
