Also known as Merveille des Quatre Saisons (Marvel of Four Seasons), wavy, bronze-red outer leaves surround a pale-green, tightly-folded, tender heart with excellent flavour. Pretty enough for the flower garden! The red colour is most intense in cool weather. Best spring and fall sown, it can withstand light frost very well. Matures in 75 days. (open pollinated seeds)
Butterheads or Boston lettuces have loose outer leaves surrounding pale, slightly oily, loose, soft heads. Bibb types (named after the man who developed them) have a more open centre-like a green rose. Both types make small heads and can be planted 20-25cm (8-10") apart.
