Cardoon

C. cardunculus
Although the cardoon resembles artichokes, it does not produce an edible flower bud. This striking HEIRLOOM perennial plant is grown either as an ornamental artichoke or for its edible leaf stalks. Cardoon grows at least 1.2m (4') tall for a stunning Mediterranean look with huge silvery-green, deeply-cut leaves and thistle-like hard flowers of rich royal purple. The silvery-grey fleshy stalks of the inner leaves are eaten. Blanch by wrapping newspaper around the plant when it is 120cm (2') tall. Harvest about 3 weeks later. In the fall the new leaf growth can be treated the same way. Thick stems, steamed and seasoned, are an old-world treat. Unopened flower buds make an unusual cut flower. (open pollinated
seeds)

Easy to grow!. Artichokes can be produced from seeds or from perennials. Perennials produce the edible flower only during the second and subsequent year, while varieties from seeds can be annual. Commercial culture is limited to warm areas hardiness zone 7 and above. Growing Artichokes require good soil, regular watering and feeding plus frost protection in winter. Rooted suckers can be planted each year so that mature specimens can be disposed of after a few years, as each individual plant only lives a few years. The peak season for artichoke harvesting is the spring, but they continue to be harvested throughout the summer, with another peak period in mid autumn.
