Jade Star Watermelon

Jade Star Watermelon

Jade Star is a distinctive, round, dark green watermelon. The very juicy red flesh has a traditional, delicious taste. The fruit size averages 3-5kg (8-12lb). Seeds are brown and tender enough to crunch. Watermelons generally need warmer days than cantalopes to mature their fruits. However, the effort of growing them is well rewarded with their wonderful flavour.
Matures in 78 days. (hybrid seeds)

Water melon for short seasons

The Jade Star variety produces watermelons that are deep red and juicy with a great taste. Plants support 2 good sized melons, usually about 10 to 12 pounds each, and then one or two smaller ones that are often full of seeds. The plants are somewhat compact with vines about 5 feet long. Melons look almost black though a dark green. In southern Alberta, I grow these in groups of 4 under a plastic cover over a wire peony ring from May to end of June to get enough heat. In 2003, Jade Stars were 22 pounds, but that was unusual.
