New England Aster
This is one of the showiest Asters, which occurs as a wildflower in many eastern states and provinces. Growing to a height of 1-2m (3-6’), the very tops of the plants are covered in 4cm (1.5”) flowers. These are tight golden-yellow centres surrounded by radiating intense purple petals. New England Aster blooms from August until the heavy frost, and is one of the last nectar sources for beneficial insects. It is particularly attractive to butterflies. It is widely adapted and prefers full sun in moist soil, but it can tolerate even deep shade.
