Carrots
The culinary versatility of carrots, combined with their nutrition, ease of growth, and centuries of cultivation, has resulted in a spectrum of shapes, sizes, and colours. Discovering a favourite variety requires some experimentation, but each has its own distinctive qualities. Among the vegetables we consider modern Western carrots, there are four primary groups: Imperator, Chantenay, Danvers, and Nantes.
Imperator types are the commonest ones you might see in a supermarket. They are long and taper to a pointed tip. One of the reasons they are so reliable for the mass market is that they can be machine-harvested.
Chantenay carrots are far stouter. They are short, and often quite wide having broad shoulders tapering to a blunt tip. These carrots are ideal for processing and juicing.
Bolero
Bolero is a great variety for home or market. Very sweet and crunchy, it is a good keeper in storage or in the ground. Roots are bright orange, 14cm (5inches) long, and slightly tapered, with the typical blunt Nantes tip. High level of resistance to Alternaria blights and powdery mildew. Very tasty!

Bolero Pelleted Seed
For ease of planting, nothing beats seeds that have a coating that makes each one bigger and easy to handle. Space the seed 2cm (1inch) apart to make thinning a breeze! Sized for precision seeding. Nantes type.

Note: Seeds expected to ship March, 2012.
Danvers
Danvers carrots are crisp, rich orange roots grow to 4cm (1.5 inches) in diameter at the top, tapering 15-20cm (6-7 inches) to a pointed end. They have a higher fibre content than Nantes types. They grow and keep well in heavier soils, and are great for canning and freezing. Heirloom.

Flyaway
This carrot was bred to be unattractive to the carrot rust fly and for some gardeners it does offer protection. For all gardeners it has the sweet, crisp flavour of the best Nantes varieties. Roots are moderately long, with a small core. In our "kid" taste test, it was tops.

One of the best juicing carrots available, this popular Chantenay type carrot from Asia has deep red/orange roots that are tender and sweet, growing to 18-20cm (7-8") long. Great, versatile garden vegetable. Plant in late spring or summer for fall harvests. 68-110 days. (open pollinated seeds)
Little Fingers
The ultimate in baby carrots, this HEIRLOOM is a fast-maturing Nantes type with smooth, golden orange skins, crisp texture, and a tender core. Rated by many as one of the best tasting carrots available, and wonderful as baby roots. Plant some in August in a raised bed or beneath a cloche, and experience the full flavour of winter "candy carrots."

Chosen by growers for summer harvest from the first spring planting, this elegant Nantes variety is deep orange, crisp, and tasty. The 15cm (6") blunt roots are smooth and very uniform for bunching with medium tall tops. Can be used for baby carrots also.

Paris Market
Paris Market carrot seeds replace Thumbelina. These small, orange, nearly spherical carrots about the size of a dollar coin. Easy to grow even in fairly heavy soils, this little gem is uniform and perfect for the home garden, patio containers, or market table. Delicious!

Prodigy
The Prodigy Carrot is a great carrot to use for juicing or in the kitchen in general. It can grow up to 10 inches long and weigh around 1-1/2 pounds. This carrot contains one of the highest amounts of vitamin A of any carrot we offer. It's roots are bright orange throughout.
Purple Haze
This stunning new variety was a 2006 AAS winner! Deep purple on the outside and bright orange inside, it has a lovely sweet taste especially when raw. Lightly stir-fry to retain a deeper purple colour. We recommend planting it after the May long weekend so it does not bolt. The roots are long (25-30 cm or 10-12") and slender with a graceful taper. Danvers type.

Rainbow Blend
We have put four of our popular carrots into this one package for your eating pleasure. Your garden will grow purple, white, red and nice big orange carrots all in the same row. To get the full range of colours, add the seeds in the package to 4 liters of fine topsoil or starter mix and sprinkle down the prepared row. The full package will sow about 50 feet of row when it is done this way! It would be a shame to thin out the plants and lose some of the colour range.

Royal Chantenay
You can expect good flavour and an ideal shape for juicing. They are also good for freezing and canning. These big, dark orange carrots are 12-15cm (5-6") long, 5cm (2") at the top, and taper to a point. Royal Chantenay is amazingly sweet for a big carrot and is a uniform selection of an old favourite.

Scarlet Nantes
Our Scarlet Nantes are hand-harvested seed grown in the Northwest with care and attention. The Heirloom variety has been grown and selected for North American conditions for at least 50 years and is a workhorse that is widely adapted; it often outperforms some of the more finicky Nantes hybrids. Strong tops and great flavour.

Snow White
These big white beauties were a real standout in our field this summer. Growing to 25cm (9") and considerable thickness, they prospered in some hard soil that was not watered well. Not a carrot for eating raw, they come into their own in soups and stews, and our customers come back for more. The green shoulder is just chlorophyll and is perfectly edible. If soil is mounded up over emerging shoulders, no green will appear. Danvers type.

White Satin
With its consistent, uniform shape and crisp, ivory white flesh, White Satin is an excellent choice for white carrots. Easy to grow, heavy yielding, sweet and early, grow White Satin for cylindrical carrots 20cm (8") long. Danvers type. (approx. 500 s/g)
