Arugula

Arugula is a cool-season salad green that has exploded in popularity in North America in the last 20 years. It is very easy to grow, it grows quickly, and its tender leaves add a mildly spicy touch to fresh salads. The greens can be cooked, as well, and make an incredible topping for pizza. Arugula tends to bolt as hot weather approaches, and its leaves become a bit tougher and distinctly hotter in flavour. So we like to grow arugula from early spring to early summer, and then from the end of summer right into winter. If provided with some protection from frost, arugula will happily grow in the low-light conditions of winter - when it maintains its mildest flavour.

Wild Arugula

Wild Arugula Winter Gardening

Diplotaxis tenufolia
Imagine - this wild  argula does not bolt all summer long, leaves are held up off the ground and are easy to pick for salads and sandwiches. This open, lacy-leaved plant has a bit more of the well-loved arugula "bite" and is great for snacking. Gather leaves all summer, watch for self-sown plants around the big one, and gather those leaves in winter. Slow germination rates and very tiny seeds mean that it is best started in the house or greenhouse for transplanting to the garden when it is big enough to handle. Set them where they are to grow as they have deep roots. Diplotaxis is the original, traditional Italian HERITAGE variety of arugula.
