Violas and pansies are instantly recognizable for their coloured markings or "faces." Bright and sunny, they provide colour in winter and spring, and are effective planted en masse, in containers, or as ground cover for spring bulbs. Prefer cool weather and need regular deadheading. Sow seed from mid-July to mid-August, to set out plants in fall for winter colour. Pre-chill (see below), barely cover, germinates in 10-21 days in the dark. (Family: Violet, Violaceae)

These perky little flowers are old-fashioned favourites and look like miniature pansies with lavender, yellow, and white faces. Direct seed in April or July. Plant 0.6cm (1/4") deep, germinates in 12-14 days. Self-sows.
