The immature seeds of the edible soybean are a nutritious snack. Steam or boil the whole pods for 3-5 minutes and set out (salted or unsalted) as a fun finger food. The small, slightly fuzzy pods hold fat green beans that pop easily out of the cooked pods. They have a smooth rich taste that kids love. Good for freezing also. The plants are big and vigorous but the seeds are delicate so don't drop or crush them. Plant when the soil has warmed in late May to early June and grow like bush beans (p.8). You may also raise some as transplants to set out after the rain stops in early June. (Family: Pea, Fabaceae)
These Edemame soyabeans won the hearts of tasters this past summer. Sayamusume is productive and with the added nuance of flavour that our Japanese neighbours appreciated. Matures in 90 days (open pollinated seeds)

Innoculant, Garden Combination
Treats 2.2kg of beans.
This fine black powder contains beneficial micro-rganisms that attach to roots of legumes such as peas and beans. They create swellings on the roots that make atmospheric nitrogen available to plants for their growth instead of from the soil or purchased nitrogen fertiliser. Wet the seeds in a bowl outside, with 1/4 teaspoon water to 56 grams of seed (3 Tablespoons to 500 grams, 1 cup water to 55lbs seed) and add the inoculant powder. Use the moistened seed within 24 hours. Please keep the inoculant package cool, since it contains a living organism.
