Rutabagas
The big yellow roots often called winter turnips or Swedes. They originated as a cross between the cabbage and the turnip. Before pumpkins were readily availible in the UK and Ireland, these large root vegetables were hollowed out and carved for use as Jack o'Lanterns.
Laurentian Organic
Certified organic! Bright purple skins cover the top two thirds of this globe-shaped rutabaga. The 10-15cm (4-6") roots keep very well in winter storage, and add rich flavour to soups and stews, as well as vitamin C and carotenoids, which encourage normal cell growth. For a lowly rutabaga, Laurentian looks great on market tables.
Matures in 100 days. (open pollinated seeds)
Marian
This variety is good-tasting, highly uniform, and vigorous. A globe-shaped root with an attractive creamy-coloured interior and purple shoulder, it is delicious cooked or raw. Shorter, wider leaves that can grow to 20cm (8") across allow closer spacing for this Laurentian-like variety. Resistant to club root and mildew.
Matures in 85-95 days. (open pollinated seeds)
