Peas
The green pea is a home garden specialty because peas really have the very best sweet flavour and nutrition when they are freshly picked. The days to maturity we state are from a March planting and are about twice as long as those listed in other catalogues because of our long cool spring. Summer planted peas mature much faster. In our rich soils and cool climate the peas that we trellis will also grow taller than listed elsewhere.
Alderman Tall Telephone
Exceptional flavour is well worth the 2-2.5m (6-8') tall trellis these need. Huge pods have a long harvest window and are easy to pick and shell for large peas. Check a few to see if they are filled before picking. Not enation-resistant.

Avalanche
A great substitute for Mammoth Melting Peas, Avalanche snow peas 15cm (6") pods that are sweet and tender. Plants are "semi-leafless" so they put more energy into producing pods, making for higher yields. Plant 2 to 3 rows close together and plants will intertwine, providing support for each other. Resistant to fusarium wilt race 1 and powdery mildew.

Cascadia
This delicious snap pea was developed just for the West Coast. The vines do not need a trellis but tumble happily about (try putting some twigs in to support them), growing to approximately 0.6m (2") overall. The dark green pods are a nice 9cm (3.5") long and are crunchy, juicy, and sweet. Resistant to the enation virus and powdery mildew.

Born in pairs at the top of the short bush are heavy yields of dark green pods to 11cm (4.5") containing 9 to 11 peas each. The peas themselves are tender and sweet and the 70cm (28") plants are resistant to wilt and mildew - ideal for coastal gardens!

Little Marvel
Since its introduction in 1908, this super-early HEIRLOOM bush pea has been a favourite both for home gardeners and commercial growers. Stocky, semi-dwarf bushes from 30-45cm (12-18") tall are well suited to container growing for balcony gardens, or in the vegetable bed. In containers, the peas can be grown in spring, and cut back in time for a summer crop, leaving the soil enriched with nitrogen. Each of the 8-10cm (3-4") pods contain 6-9 mid-green, tasty peas. Winner of the RHS Award of Garden Merit!

Mister Big
A top quality shelling pea with a prodigious output of 12cm (4") long pods that contain an average of 8 sweet, flavourful peas each. You'll want to stake these indeterminate plants for maximum yield, but they are otherwise adaptable to many growing conditions. An AAS-Winner with high resistance to Wilt and Powdery Mildew.

Sugar Ann
Extra early, incredibly sweet snap peas on short, 60cm (2') vines that don't require trellising. Excellent choice for smaller garden spaces. The bushy plants produce crisp, tasty, 6cm (2½") pods, and have excellent resistance to pea enation virus and powdery mildew. 1984 AAS Winner and RHS Award Winner for Garden Merit.

This variety replaces Sugar Daddy. Sweet, stringless pods are borne on 80cm (30") semi-leafless vines. Pods are about 9cm (3 1/2") long and average 2 pods per node for high production (it yielded well for our market garden). Yields are earlier than those of Sugar Snap. Powdery mildew resistant and tolerant to pea enation virus.

Sugar Snap
Quite possibly the best tasting snap pea. An AAS Winner in 1979, Sugar Snap produces thick, round, meaty pods that can be snapped like green beans or left on the vine until 5 to 7 medium green shelling peas mature. The pods develop strings at full maturity. Sugar Snap peas freeze well, but can't handle the heat of canning. Plants are frost resistant, so try some for a fall harvest. Expect vines to 2m (6') tall.
