Asparagus
Asparagus officinalis.
Asparagus varieties grown from seed have many desirable characteristics. Asparagus shoots supply many vitamins and minerals and are low in calories. They are best used within days of harvest so the vitamin C does not deteriorate. Store in the refrigerator with stems wrapped in a damp paper towel.
Jersey Knight
This all-male variety yields the best-quality spears of the Jersey hybrids. Each mature plant will produce 7-9 quality spears with slightly purple bracts. Spear diameter is between 1-2cm (3/8-3/4"). Jersey Knight has a high tolerance to fusarium wilt and crown rot as well as rust and cercospera. (hybrid seeds)
UC157 F1
Developed in 1978, this UC157 F1 asparagus is one of the most popular in the world. Although it prefers warmer weather and milder winters, it can be grown successfully here on the Coast if mulched in cold winters. Early spears that are uniform light green with tight, tapering heads. Superior resistance to rust and fusarium root rot. The seeds are more expensive, but with improved results from highly productive and reliable plants. (hybrid seeds)
UC157 F2
UC157 F2 Asparagus seeds are an open-pollinated asparagus of outstanding variety for the Coast and other mild climate areas. It gives the advantage of earlier production and heavier total yields than some of the older commercial varieties. Three to five dark green spears are produced from each mature crown. The spears are 1.5-2mm (1/2-3/4") in diameter, with light bracts. It has moderate tolerance to fusarium root rot. (open pollinated seeds)
