Oregano |
Oregano comes in a surprising array of colours and flavours beyond the familiar green hues and warm scents of Greek oregano. For the best flavour in cooking, however, Greek oregano is the choice that is appropriately punget to the nose and peppery on the tastebuds. This herb is hardy when well established and placed in a hot, dry, and very well-drained location that mimics its Mediterranean origins. It will need mulch and protection to get through the winter if there is no snow cover. Oregano dries quickly when placed in a warm, shaded and ventilated place. Separate the leaves from the stems and store them in an air-tight jar so that your chilis, soups, sauces, and pizzas are flavoured with a bit of Mediterranean summer warmth.

Origanum vulgare hirtun
Greek Oregano offers the best, most pungently-flavoured leaves for cooking. Plants are very hardy when established and impart a wonderful wild-mountain aroma in the garden with its tiny white flowers. Germination may be slow. Direct sow seed in late spring into warm soil or raise transplants. Plant height 45cm (18").
