Mint
Possibly the world's oldest medicine, mint has been prized for its high menthol content for as long as ten thousand years. Though it occurs naturally in the wild, peppermint is considered by botanists to be a hybrid of two or more mint species. Mint thrives in shade, in moist soils, where it spreads by horizontally growing roots known as rhizomes. Grown in full sun, it should be kept well watered.
Peppermint
Mentha x piperata
Hot, rich mint aroma issues from the crushed or dried leaves of this spreading perennial plant. Consider growing it in containers, as it will become hard to control over the years. Both the leaves and flowers can be dried for teas or use in stews and sauces. Peppermint grows well in moist soil in full sun to heavy shade.
