Lovage

Lovage is the green giant of herbs, growing to several feet tall and wide. It is a handsome plant so can provide height and foliage to the flowerbed or cover in the vegetable patch for bulky plants such as rhubarb. Do plan its location in the garden carefully, as it is difficult to move once it is established. Lovage is easily grown from seed sown in late summer or fall or from a young plant or division.

Flowers bloom in big cartwheels and attract beneficial predatory wasps. Dry lovage seeds make a great substitute for celery seed in cooking and its sharp and spicy celery-flavoured leaves can be used both as a soup herb and a breath freshener.

Levisticum officinale
A striking accent in the garden, especially when it flowers. Lovage tastes like celery; plants are long-lived and attract a lot of attention. Add a few leaves to pea soup and stews to add a meaty flavour. Deer resistant.
