Bergamot
Lemon mint bergamot is an ornamental annual that is commonly known as bee balm. It is native to the hot, dry environment of the American Southwest and is traditionally used by the Hopi to dress wild game. Its leaves are strongly lemon scented and excellent in cooking and for tea.
Lemon Bergamot
Monarda citriodora
This vigorous plant has a wonderful taste and lemony aroma, but it is usually grown as an ornamental or for its cut flowers. Easily started from seed, this produces masses of tiered pink-purple blossoms from August until frost. Self-sows. Flowers cut and dry well.
Wild Bergamot
Monarda fistulosa
Commonly known as Bee Balm. Curious flowers that vary in shades from pink to lavender appear in July and August above stout, strong stems bearing aromatic leaves. The leaves are excellent in tea, adding the distinct flavour to Earl Grey blends. Plants grow to a height of 60-90cm (24-36"), and those that don't survive as perennials in Coastal gardens will likely self-sow. All bergamots are highly attractive to beneficials like butterflies and wild bees.
