Herb Seeds

"Those herbs which perfume the air most delightfully, not passed by as the rest, but, being trodden upon and crushed, are three; that is, burnet, wild thyme and watermints. Therefore, you are to set whole alleys of them, to have the pleasure when you walk or tread."

Frances Bacon 1561 - 1626

Herbs were the equivalent of air fresheners. Herbs crushed underfoot would release fragrance into the damp air and mask the smell of open sewers - the "foul and pestilential airs." Aromatic Herbs such as Chamomile, sage, basil, mint, were in great demand. Lavender was not as well known as it is now. It came from southern France and dry regions and was expensive.

Until George IV, English monarchs had a royally appointed "Strewer of Herbs" whose function was to ensure that the Royal apartments were scented and free of disease through judicious use of herbs strewn on the floors. We hope you will find the selection of herb seeds below as enticing to the senses as the are to the soul. Our dried organic spices are delicious in soups, stews, curries and stuffings.
