Easy Seeder Planting Guides

Peat Pellets

High quality compressed peat pellets with added low-ammonia fertilzer encased in a thin biodegradable mesh netting expand in water and increase 7 times to a height of 2 1/8" by 1¾" in width, minutes after water has been added. Plug Inserts 12 Cell

Joined cells with drainage holes in a flexible plastic sheet. The whole sheet fits inside the Seedling Trays (ZHG115). Each 9 x 13cm (3½ x 5") cell can be detached on its own. This size is good for large seeded plants like cucumbers and squash or for seedling clumps like Lobelia, Alyssum, or microgreens.

Plug Inserts 24 Cell

These 24 cell seedling trays are made from flexible plastic sheeting. Ideal for inserting into  Seedling Trays (ZHG115)
Each plug can be separated from the sheet, or kept intact, depending on your planting needs. Each sheet contains 24 cells @ 6.4 x 8.9 cm (2.5" x 3.5"). This size is great for starting larger seeds like melons or squashes indoors, prior to transplanting outdoors. But you can start smaller seeds in them, too, like lettuce or onions. They also work very well for flowers like Alyssum and Lobelia - allow the roots to develop a bit, tip out the whole root ball, and break it apart at transplant time. Available in sets of 6 (ZHG116B) or 24 (ZHG116C)  Both sizes come in a box that is 27cm wide, 7cm tall, and 53cm long.

Plug Inserts 72 Cells

Joined cells in a flexible plastic sheet for inserting into No-Hole flats (ZHG115). These flats break apart into 12 sections of 6 cells each, or can be kept intact, depending on your garden needs. This size is great for planting individual seeds like lettuce or tomatoes, or for small groups, like 3 onion seeds in each, before transplanting outdoors. 72 cells @ 3.75 x 3.75cm (1.5 x 1.5"). Please note that due to the wide and brittle nature of this product, we do not ship individual flats. Both the "B" and "C" sizes of this product come in a box that is 27cm wide, 8cm tall, and 53cm long.

Plug Inserts Professional

These professional V-shaped seedling plug trays are used by commercial growers. While they can be inserted into No-Hole Flats, they are intended to be placed on a propagating table so air can circulate under the tray and the roots stay in the plug. There are 72 or 128 cells in each of the 5 rigid 30 x 60cm (12 x 24") tray. Use to start lettuce, members of the cabbage family, onions, flowers, etc. in a greenhouse or outdoors. To remove transplants you can pull them out (after watering). Inserting a piece of 1/4" dowel into the drainage hole also works well to dislodge the plugs.

Potmaker

Just roll and press into the wooden potmaker to create an environmentally friendly pot that will naturally decompose in the ground. No glue is required.  This clever device creates sturdy little pots from newspaper that are ideal for starting young plants, seedlings or cuttings. Very easy to use potmakers have even been successfully kid-tested. The press and form are made of solid maple. Great for an endless supply of starter pots. Seedling Warmers

This thick plastic seedling heat mat has an embedded heating wire in it. Because the thermostat is outside the mat, the heat given off by the mat is related to the temperature of the surrounding air. So, when your room is cool, the mat is 5-11 degrees Celsius (10-20 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer than that. And when your room or cold frame is warm, the mat is much warmer. In late spring when the surrounding temperature (not soil temperature) is over 24 degrees Celsius (75 degrees Fahrenheit), it is best to unplug the mat so that the seedlings do not become too hot. Direct sunlight will overheat the air surrounding your flats and cause overhating as well.

Windowsill Greenhouse

A great option for windowsill germination! This lightweight, reusable plastic tray and clear plastic dome allow for careful monitoring of seeds as they germinate. The tray fits and includes 12 Jiffy Pellets, and the plastic dome that controls the ambient humidity around each pellet.
