Flower Seeds Stocks
Stocks
Bloom time: Spring.
Grow this native of Europe and Asia for the extraordinary scent that the otherwise unremarkable mauve flowers give off in the evening and overnight. They do this to attract night time pollinators such as moths. Matthiola longipetala (stocks) is another member of the Brassica family, so it's a cousin of the cabbage, believe it or not. Stocks work well in containers, but keep plants amply moist, particularly in hot weather.
Evening Scented Stock
Hardy Annual
Matthiola bicornis
Spindly and insignificant by day, it is potently fragrant at dusk! Single, four-petalled flowers are a pale lilac. Best grown either in out-of-the-way spots or with Virginian Stock to combine their complimentary growing habits, colours, and fragrances. Shear back once for continuing scent from July until frost. Sow on surface; germinates in 3-20 days.
