Snapdragon
Bloom time: Late spring through late autumn, with a rest in mid-summer when temperatures are high.
The ancients agreed - this member of the Plantain family produces a flower seed pod that looks "like a nose," hence Antirrhinum, the Greek name given to the genus. Even the common name refers to the snout of a dragon which snaps open and closed when pressed from the sides. In warmer climates snapdragons may return as perennials, but in cool winter areas, they will self-sow as annuals. Snapdragons are pollinated by bumblebees, which come in droves wherever they are planted.
