Rudbeckia
Bloom time: Summer to early autumn.
North American wildflower cousins to Echinacea. Long lasting blooms in summer in vivid golden yellow. Highly attractive to bumblebees and butterflies. And drought tolerant, so suitable for xeriscaping.
Black Eyed Susans
Rudbeckia hirta
At 1m (3') tall, this North American native annual wildfower is immediately familiar, and conjures a sense of the heat of mid-summer. Dark brown cone centres are surrounded by pure yellow petals in flowers 5-8cm (2-3") across. The plant has a long history as a medicinal herb with astringent properties, and it's very attractive to butterflies.
