Physalis
Dense bushes of rich green foliage reveal brightly coloured orange "lanterns" by the end of summer. This close relative of the tomatillo grows a papery husk (calyx) over a small, inedible fruit. The husks can be removed or gathered by the stems and dried for all sorts of fall and even Christmas decorations. Physalis will grow in partial shade or full sun, and does well in soils that are slightly acidic - so they cope better in locations where other decorative plants just won't work.
Chinese Lanterns
Physalis alkekengi
Forming compact bushes of dense foliage, and followed by distinctive orange and red, papery "lanterns," Physalis belings in the middle border of every garden. Plants grow to 40-60cm (15-24") tall, and make delightful autumn displays.
