Lunaria
Bloom time: Spring to early summer. Distinctive seed pods develop by late summer.
Delicate, mauve, 4-petalled flowers appear above soft, lush green foliage in the second year of growth. The flowers are followed by striking, flat, round green seed pods that mature into white, papery coin-like disks in late fall and early winter. Surprisingly, these distinctive plants are members of the Brassica family, so they're actually relatives of the cabbage.
Honesty
Brought to America by Puritans, this heirloom is also known by such colorful names as Judas' Penny and Moonwort. Plant in spring in sun or partial shade and enjoy mauve flowers, followed by distinctive papery seedpods. Will self-sow aggressively, so choose its location with care.
