Asclepias

Bloom time: Summer.

Asclepias is a member of the milkweed family that produces copious amounts of nectar - this means that it's a favourite feeding source for butterflies. Both Queen and Monarch butterflies will lay their eggs on the plants as it's a major food souce for their caterpillars. It can tolerate both dry and wet soils, and spreads very slowly by means of an expanding, tuberous root. In early Native American medicine, Asclepias was used as an expectorant, but today we grow it for the attractive orange flower clusters, and to lure butterflies to the garden.

Butterfly Bush

Butterfly Bush Benificials Full Sun Xeriscaping

Perennial (P)
Sometimes called Orange Milkweed, this hearty, drought-proof perennial is intensely attractive to butterflies and other beneficial garden insects. Unlike other members of the Milkweed family, Butterfly Weed does not issue a milky sap when broken. Waxy green stems to 70cm (27”) tall are topped by vivid orange flower clusters. Grown in small clusters, this plant attracts butterflies like no other, even in urban gardens. Flowers are followed by exotic looking fruits that release easy-to-harvest seeds. Do not confuse this species (Asclepias tuberosa) with the invasive species A. speciosa and A. syriaca.

NOTE: All parts of the plant are harmful if swallowed. Asclepias leaves can be toxic to chickens, so plant out of range of foraging flocks.
