Bloom time: Late spring to early autumn.
Yarrow is a dynamic, drought-tolerant perennial that has been used for centuries as a medicinal herb. In the 17th century it was even popular as a vegetable dish. The dried stalks of yarrow are sometimes used in the Chinese divinination system of I Ching. The astringent qualities of yarrow are said to be useful in fighting cold and flu. All around, this tall, decorative plant is one of the most highly prized companion plants and lure for beneficial garden insects.
Yarrow
Perennial (P)
The classic golden-flowered yarrow is an old-world herb that grows on sturdy stems to a height of 120cm (47”). Attractive in the middle or back of the perennial bed, from late June to September the plant bears 15cm (6”) wide heads of tightly compressed, brilliant yellow flowers. Yarrow is highly drought-resistant, and has been used for centuries as a companion plant in the vegetable garden – its scent repels aphids, but attracts hoverflies, ladybugs and wasps that feed on common garden grubs. As if this weren’t enough, yarrow contains enzymes that break down swiftly and are released, speeding the breakdown of materials in composts.
