Hummingbirds
Hanging hummingbird feeders is a great way to observe these beautiful, tiny birds up close. Hummingbirds require food in nectar form that is high in carbohydrates in order to sustain their high metabolic rates. Always use foods that are free from coloring and preservatives, and hang your feeder where you'll have easy access to it. To keep your hummingbirds healthy and coming back often, you'll need to keep the feeder clean and full.
You can make your own hummingbird food to fill your feeders, too: Just dissolve 1/4 cup (57 ml) regular white sugar in 1 cup (227 ml) water. Warming the water on the stove helps to dissolve the sugar, but don't let it boil, as this can cause the sugar to caramelize into a form that is toxic to the little birds.
