How to Grow Basil

See all Basil

Latin

Ocimum basilicum

When To Start

Start indoors early May or outside when it is reliably warm in June. Basil needs real warmth and regular fertilization, Gather fresh leaves before the flowers appear by cutting the growing tip and the 2 pairs of leaves below it for the kitchen. Keep flowers picked to encourage new leaf growth. For a large harvest, you can ccut off as much as a half the plant at once.
