How to Grow Eggplants

See all Eggplants

Latin

Solanum melongena

Preparing the Soil

Using a clear plastic cloche or floating row covers will help growth
by increasing warmth. Cool temperatures increase leafy growth, but no fruit will set.

When To Start

Plant indoors April 1-15. Grow like peppers but eggplants need even more warmth before transplanting (mid to late June). Below 21ºC (70ºF), fruit will not set.

Growing Tips

In optimum conditions at least 65% of seeds will germinate. Soil temperature
for germination: 24-32ºC (75-90ºF). Usual seed life: 2 years.
