How to Grow Cauliflower

See all Cauliflower

Latin

Brassica oleracea var. botrytis

Growing Tips

Blanching: Our varieties tend to self-wrap the flower. Even so, to keep it completely white, bend a large leaf over so it lies flat on the curd to shade it. Days to Maturity: From transplanting; add 20-25 days if direct-seeding.

When To Start

Start indoors from early March to mid-June. Transplant in 5-6 weeks. You can direct seed (see Growing Cole Crops) when temperature is reliably above 10ºC (50ºF).

Harvest

Once curd forms check every day and cut when the florets are just beginning to
separate. At this point the flavour is at peak quality and the size is maximum.

Diseases

The common disease problems of cauliflower are similar to cabbage. Many disease and insect problems can be reduced if cole crops can be grown in a 4-5 year rotation with non-cruciferous crops.
