General
Annual flowers native to western North America.
Latin
Collinsia heterophylla
Family: Plantaginaceae
Difficulty
Easy
Season & Zone
Exposure: Full sun where summers are mild, or partial shade in hotter areas
Zone: 3-10
Timing
Direct sowing outdoors will give the best results. Do this in March to early-April, when some risk of frost is still possible. Where winters are mild, they can also be sown mid-September to October.
Starting
Sow seeds 5mm (¼") deep, and thin to 15-30cm (6-12") apart.
Growing
Any moist, fertile, well-drained soil in the pH range of 5.0-8.0 will do. C. heterophylla tolerates dry soil, and is good for xeriscaping, but in very hot weather it tends to stop blooming. Deadhead regularly, and be prepared for some self-sowing.
