Traditionally, these greens are blended and scattered over the soil and covered loosely. Alternatively, individual varieties can be sown in short rows so that the chef can easily choose the specific salad green variety desired for the kitchen. This method allows you to choose slower growing varieties that are not hidden by more vigorous varieties. Brassica seeds, the little round black ones including arugula, germinate and grow faster than lettuces.
Start every 3 weeks, from March to September, for a continuous harvest. These salad greens can be grown in the sun or part shade in a container that is at least 10cm (4") deep. Try to space seeds about 1cm (1/2") apart. Cover lightly with soil, and firm them in. Four grams (the A size package) of a blend will plant a 12m (40') of row in a strip 7cm (3") wide. A container, therefore, gets a very light sprinkle of seeds. Overplanting is one of the major causes of disappointment in growing salad greens. Usual seed life: 3 years.
