Keep the area where you plant your carrots weeded and watered. Ensure you thin the carrots to give the roots room to develop properly, or space your seeding so there is less need to thin. Thin to 4-10cm, when the plants are 5cm (2") tall. Use wider spacing to get larger roots. As they grow, carrots push out of the ground, so hill soil up over exposed roots to prevent a green shoulder.

For container gardening with carrots use drainage pipes 6-8" in diameter and a foot in length filled with a potting soil amended with sand. Thin to three or four strong carrots, each spaced equally apart from the others. Keep well watered during the growing season and be sure to use a complete organic fertilizer.
